'Tis the season...for festivals

The granddaddy of all Milwaukee summer events - Summerfest - begins tomorrow. Summerfest is ten days of music, beer, sun, music, breezes off the lake, beer, music and did I mention beer?

Well, maybe not quite so much beer, especially if you attend during the day. To soak up the beer, a wide variety of foodstuffs is also for sale. The music is primarily rock in all its forms, with a fair representation of country and blues, and a bit of jazz if you look hard enough. Huge fireworks mark the end of the opening day, with a repeat performance on the evening of July 3rd.

In all seriousness, though, the Milwaukee lakefront is a wonderful place to hold an event. The lake acts as an air conditioner, with temps often five to ten degrees lower than just a mile inland. The grounds are fairly spacious, and if parking is a concern, there are great options - shuttles from various park and ride lots and a trolley around downtown.

Throughout the summer, a variety of other weekend fests inhabit the grounds. Pretty much every ethnic group found in the city has their own weekend, complete with food, music and cultural displays. You can eat your way around the world just by going to a festival each weekend.

Not a bad way to spend a summer.
