Non-plans

In the spirit of cultivating spontaneity, as well as in the secure knowledge that plans made invariably go awry, I'm non-planning events for this vacation week. It's not that I'm going to sit around doing nothing, rather, that each day will be taken as it comes.

The real danger here is that things I'd really like to do won't get done, but it appears God has blessed me with a bit more ambition than usual. This quilt has been languishing on the sewing table for almost a year, layered and partially quilted. The roadblock? I really, really didn't like the quilting pattern I used. The quilt is constructed in five lengthwise strips; after quilting one strip in a squared off maze-like grid, I realized it just wasn't working.

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to pick out machine quilting?

So it sat, until Saturday night. Rather than face up to the daunting task of ripping out tiny stitches (whilst not cutting the quilt itself), I started quilting the rest of the thing in an alternate pattern, figuring it would at least jump-start my ambition.

It worked. Over the next two days (hot, humid days - did I mention the quilt has wool batting?), I finished up all the other quilting and put the binding on. Granted, that one strip still needs to be picked out and requilted, but I'm on a roll here. Next up, the stained glass quilt.

A bit of a break today, though. A friend and I are heading out to a local-ish farm stand to look at flowers, herbs and veggie plants. Well, for me to look at, for her to buy. I kill things. It's a fun summer alternative to just going out for a soda.

With a bit of luck, later this afternoon I'll be able to finish layering the stained glass quilt and figure out how to quilt it.

Not that I'm actually planning to do that, though.
