Sometimes a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Well, I have light again. I also have confirmed knowledge of several things that I'd almost rather not know.

The fixture in the living room is indeed original to the house and is what shorted out.

The wiring, apparently, is also original. That would be the old, cloth-covered stuff. Close to twice my age.

Tonight I plan to make the long-put off updates to my home inventory.

Tomorrow I will call my agent and double my renter's insurance policy.

I'm still living in semi-darkness, only this time, voluntarily.
