Garden Harvest

When I'm stressed (see previous entry), I get the munchies. So the fortuitous arrival today via post of a small sample of Nabisco's Garden Harvest Chips was a blessing. I figure since they were nice enough to send me a sample, I'll return the favor and review them.

These are apparently meant as a healthier alternative to snack chips. They are made with whole grains, with half a serving of fruits or vegetables to flavor them. My one complaint (and this is common to all processed foods) is the sodium value - something like 9% of your daily intake. They were plenty salty; unless it is truly needed as a preservative, they could cut down on the salt by half, easily.

The first bag was their tomato-basil flavor. Holy cow, were they tomato-y! Very yummy, once you got past the initial blast of tomato taste. My urge to cover them in melted mozzarella cheese, however, would probably defeat the purpose of the "healthy" aspect of the snack. They certainly have enough flavor to be eaten straight from the bag without any of those pesky, high-fat dips.

The second bag was banana flavor. Here, I have a confession to make: I don't particularly care for bananas, don't like banana bread and prefer my banana splits without the bananas. That said, these chips were very good. For bananas. They tasted a bit like banana bread on steroids (and salt) - bolder taste than bread, but definitely banana. Anyone else would have loved them.

The other flavors appear to be Apple-Cinnamon and Vegetable Medley (California Blend? Midwestern Blend? Any lima beans in there? It doesn't say). The tomato ones may eventually make it to my cupboards, especially in mid-winter, when I would kill for a fresh tomato, if only they didn't cost the equivalent of a tank of gas.

Final grade: B+
