Ah, the winter solstice! Thanks to the persistent cloud cover, we haven't actually seen the sun much all week, but it's nice to know that after today, the days will get longer. Imperceptibly at first, but longer nonetheless.
In honor of the solstice, I may do something radical, like come home from work on time. Sunset is 4:19 p.m.; if I leave on time, I should be home before it drops fully beyond the horizon. There's that pesky fact of driving westward into the setting sun to get home, but I'll deal with it for a little vitamin D.
Unfortunately, in spite of lengthening days, the long winter stretches in front of us. At the moment, we have no snow cover; the "white Christmas" people are whining, as it looks like we won't have one. While I like snow well enough - especially now that I won't have to brush off the car, shovel or dig the car out after blizzards - once it comes, it's like an unloved relative who stretches their two week visit into a month. Snow just isn't pretty anymore in April.
Still, winter days are good for a few things: hearty soups simmering on the stove, creamy hot chocolate, stacks of books to be read, walks in the snow with your honey. After today,we have a little bit more day to enjoy those things.
