Dinner aftermath

Five pounds of beef roast. Four college co-eds, and skinny little things at that. Which of the two came away from last night's dinner victorious?

The co-eds, of course.

Actually, I deliberately cooked for a bigger crowd in order to send some leftovers home with the girls. I would have killed for a home cooked meal whilst in college, and leftovers to take with me back to the dorm would have put me over the moon. All that is left in my refrigerator of the beef, roasted veggies, rolls and apple crisp is a small container of veggies and a lonely roll. Wait - there are a few more apples and the rest of the gallon of ice cream; I can make more apple crisp!

While our students are personable, bright, polite and focused, they also unintentionally made me feel very, very old. It's rather easy to ignore the advances of age when you have no children of your own to mark the time. It's even easier when you have a group of friends who are twenty or more years younger than you are (as long as you ignore the fact you've watched them grow up from the age of eight). But time is marching on.

If I weren't so tired, I'd ramble on a bit about the odd phase of life this is, being neither fish (young person) nor fowl (middle aged soon-to-be in-laws and grandparents), still working but thinking more about the time after (if there is any, in this economy). But I need a rest.

That's a rest, not a rest home.
