It made me sick to see this in the paper this morning. Gangs of kids being stupid, threatening and violent both inside and outside the Fairgrounds last night gave a really bad ending to the first day of the fair. The truly frightening aspect of this is that this is not the first incident like this in the county this summer, though the scale is much larger. A smaller incident happened over the fourth of July weekend in one of our parks, and a few smaller scale gang robberies have taken place in our campus neighborhood in the past couple of months. Those are only the incidents I've heard about.
Milwaukee has long been marked as the most segregated city in the country, a legacy still handed down from the days when it was illegal for African Americans to live in certain sections of the city. It seems not much progress has been made on racial issues since those laws were taken off the books.
Why not?
There are no easy answers. Frankly, I just don't get it.
