It is a symbol of all the things wrong with our educational system, I think, when a national teachers' union decides to reward our fleabag senators by giving them the "Friend of Education" award. Sheesh. Way to set an example by lauding disrespect for an employer and running away rather than facing an issue head on.
Teachers' unions are also setting a fine example for our young people by trying to force school districts to spend more money for health insurance than necessary - and southeast Wisconsin already has one of the highest insurance costs in the country, on average.
Say what you will, the changes made by the collective bargaining bill and cuts in state aid to school districts are having a positive impact. Districts are being forced to find ways to save money; as a result they are trimming the fat from their budget, making changes they should have made long ago (or would have made if not hamstrung by the teachers' unions).
Milwaukee Public Schools just announced massive layoffs. Now, they've cried wolf in the past (did the same thing last summer, then called back most people before school started). MPS is a political animal that has never really been about educating the kids; if it were about the kids, the massive amounts of money thrown at the district in years past would have yielded something other than an extremely high drop out record.
