Good morning! A fresh pot is on the burner; even if you don't generally drink coffee, fill 'er up: a new study has found that a mystery ingredient in caffeinated coffee boosts the anti-Alzheimer's effects already present in caffeine. The mystery ingredient is found only in coffee, not in other caffeinated drinks.
Happy Canada Day to our neighbors to the north! We certainly have a lot in common this weekend as both countries celebrate their founding. Maple Leaf or Stars and Stripes - long may they wave.
Hot weekend on tap here, which means lots of coffeehouses and movies for me. Because it is a holiday, the library (a convenient, cool place to sit and read all day) is closed through Monday. On the last Monday holiday (Memorial Day) I spent all day reading at Panera; I may repeat that trick this weekend. Heh - any excuse to just sit and read is welcome.
Except I think I've already packed one of the books I specifically would like to read this weekend...sometimes, it doesn't pay to be efficient.
Our church's founding pastor and his family left town this week, on to new challenges and ministries in Colorado. Our new pastor has already been preaching for a month or more, with his installation service back then as well. Still, this week feels more like the beginning of the new era. Pastor Neal is starting a series for the summer on discipleship. If you are in the area, or will be passing through the area on a Sunday, drop me a line and I'll send you location and service times.
This has been a week for random people-meetings. Last Sunday I met Kimberly, an Army vet studying nursing, in a random conversation at Starbucks (Hi, Kimberly - hope to see you again either there or visiting at New Day!). A neighbor from down the block and I have spoken more recently than in the entire ten years or so she's lived there. You never really understand someone until you get to know their history; her son, who I knew was a chef at some point, is also a Katrina survivor with some stories that are too harrowing to share.
Great reminders to look beyond myself, to listen when people need to talk and to remember, as Paul told the Thessalonian church, to pray constantly.
