Let there be...well, whatever it is, it's not light

Here's a take on the upcoming ban on 100 watt incandescent light bulbs, which is soon to be followed by a ban on all incandescents (except for certain special-purpose ones).

Gah. Doesn't the government have anything better to do than stick their nose in my living room (like, say, pass a budget anytime in the last two years, or come to an agreement on the debt ceiling?)? When this bill was first passed, I think my assumption was that sooner or later, our esteemed politicians would come to their senses and get rid of it.

Serves me right for putting "sense" and "politician" in the same thought.

The light above my kitchen sink is the most used light in the house. After replacing the CFL bulb twice in two years, I finally put an incandescent back in the fixture. The promise of long life on the CFLs looks to be a lie; I had the same approximate life with a CFL used in the living room lamp that is on a timer. Let's not discuss the Frankenstein-like hue the curly bulbs impart to anyone unfortunate enough to sit in range of their glow.

There are seven eight hundred-watt incandescents in the various ceiling fixtures in my current flat. It is so very incredibly tempting to replace them all with CFLs and abscond with the good bulbs...
