Winding down the weekend

All in all, this weekend was pretty close to perfect, at least in comparison the last couple of months.

Friday night the Crazy Canasta Chicks met...honestly, I am so very blessed that Carol thought to include me in the initial round of invitations.  These women are smart, funny, sassy, genuine and transparent - and pretty darn spiritually mature as well.

That's not to say we aren't all a bit silly and slaphappy.  All of us work full time, and by Friday night, few of us can focus very well.  You wouldn't think a little old three of spades sitting all by its lonesome on the discard stack is a source of hilarity...but it kept being picked up as part of the pile, then set out on its own as the discard, hand after hand, and round after round.  Still, the winning team won with exactly 5000 points, a feat we'll never again accomplish.

Thanks to a late night (made later by watching part of a movie when I got home) I slept in.  A full, uninterrupted night's sleep is unheard of around here.  In fact, it put me in such a good frame of mind I made a mushroom and cheese omelet for breakfast rather than grabbing a yogurt.

Cooking was a major theme, with the big grocery run and potato prep yesterday. I did finish stuffing and freezing them last night; they are now individually wrapped in plastic wrap, secure in a bag in the freezer. No, I've not tried one yet, as I made beef stew with mushrooms for supper today.  Three containers of that are nestled next to the potatoes in the freezer.

And the dishes are done. Well, washed.  We air dry around here.

Somewhere on Saturday I had time to spend a few hours reading at a coffee shop.  This afternoon was spent updating the check book and balancing three months each of checking and savings accounts - which came out to the penny on the first try (using my debit card for everything means many, many entries in the course of a month),

It doesn't really sound like much, but that is the point, I think.  No responsibilities other than having fun Friday night, a chance to get back in the kitchen and mess around, time to spend reading just for fun (and for a review, which I hope to have up by next weekend)...little things that help keep the big things in life on an even keel.  When too many big boxes of responsibility are tossed in your boat, filling in with the little pebbles can help trim it out.

No idea why I'm full of nautical metaphors tonight.  A bowl of vanilla custard with fresh strawberries and pecans is waiting for me - sweet dreams!
