A few years ago, lawmakers in Wisconsin were bemoaning the fact that because of our very late primary, the state didn't have much, if any, impact on presidential elections. Or anything else political, for that matter.
Be careful what you wish for, as they say.
Earlier this week, Senator Kohl announced he won't seek another term. This opens up a long-time Democratic seat to...change. For a little while, Paul Ryan considered running; according to this, he has decided against it, wisely. As he states in the article, he currently enjoys more influence within his party as budget chair. A telling quote from him -"I don't want to be in Congress for the rest of my life." Interpret that as you will.
That leaves us with Tommy Thompson as a potential Republican candidate. The former governor and one-time Health and Human Services secretary has a history of letting his name out there for an office, but failing to follow through. If we don't put out a strong contender, there is a chance Russ Feingold may claw his way back into the Senate.
Meanwhile, Governor Walker is speeding through the items on his agenda, while fending off death threats for daring to take on the unions. The crazy lady who lost the election for state supreme court will simply not shut up and go away; since the recount has confirmed her loss, she sees the next logical step as a legal challenge. Recall elections are springing up all over the state.
It truly is a curse to live in interesting times.
