Do you remember the meat shortage in the early 1970's? I have a vague recollection of what it was all about, but a much clearer recollection of the first time I became aware of people's drive to stockpile items that are, or may become, in short supply.
It was during my one and only experience with babysitting when I was a teenager (don't ask). News of the meat shortage had been circulating for a while, and even I was aware of it. For some reason I needed to go into the parents' freezer, and lo and behold - stacks of steak, handfuls of hamburger and stashes of stew meat.
Apparently, I've now been bitten by the stockpiling bug. First, it was the twice-baked potatoes for the freezer, plus three containers of left over beef stew with mushrooms. Today, it's chicken rice casserole (with tons of cheddar cheese and homemade toasted breadcrumbs on top) and the beginnings of chicken with wild rice soup. I still want to make the Pioneer Woman's oatmeal-craisin cookie dough (you freeze the dough in logs; slice and bake from frozen).
The good news is that there is a limit to the amount of room I have; since everything needs to fit in the freezer attached to the refrigerator, there is no real danger of my becoming a hoarder...
...but just wait until I move into that condo.
