Truly random
- The "wrong" people won some of yesterday's elections (though the most vital one in Wisconsin is still too close to call). The result of the country executive race in Milwaukee County reinforced my decision to look for a condo outside of the county; had it gone the other way, I would have reconsidered. Still, I need to remind my Christian friends (and myself) that God establishes all authority (see Romans 13:1 - 3) and we are called to pray for those in authority (see 1 Tim. 1:1 - 2). Be graceful in defeat.
- Even at six in the morning, the clerks at the Starbucks drive through are friendly, helpful and pleasant to deal with. Wish I enjoyed my job that much.
- Love this quote, from an article by Dennis Prager reprinted at RealClearPolitics.com on why God isn't doing well these days:
The difference today is that life has been so good for most Westerners that suffering is no longer regarded as part of life, but as an aberration that can be done away with. Meanwhile, the liberal wings of Christianity and Judaism are too influenced by secularism to make an effective religious case for God, whom the religious left has largely rendered a celestial buddy.
- Likewise, this quote from a trevinwax.com review of a session from a conference of megachurch pastors:
James MacDonald warned that a distorted version of Platt’s teaching equates “poverty” and “spirituality.” Instead, MacDonald believes we need a full-orbed theology of joy in God that includes joy in the good gifts God has given us. Emphasizing radical sacrifice can lead to poverty theology that is all about the immediate divesting of money rather than the multiplication of money that will lead to greater involvement in mission.
- In the midst of all the bad news I've received in the past several months, there is one shining ray of hope...it's not my story to tell, but if it does happen, will be very good news indeed. Nice to have something to look forward to for a change.
- The condo-buying decision becomes more complicated by the moment. Rapidly rising gas prices when I'm considering at least tripling my commute distance. Tight government budgets leading to cutbacks in the bus system that would normally be an alternative to driving. Massive road rebuilding projects on all major freeways expected to last through at least 2020 - at a time when I want to move further out and would need those roads. The mortgage rates may be low and housing selling at fire sale prices, but the incidental costs look to be rather more serious than expected.
- I have both Fritos and chocolate chip cookies in my lunch today. Don't judge; I'm really stressed here.
