I may be the only person in the state who didn't know until this morning that the Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl. Every game I've seen a piece of this season has been a Packer loss; I stayed away from the television last night, going to bed before the game was over.
It's been fun to read the stories this morning (the on-line edition of the paper has almost nothing but football stories), especially the way the faith of some of the players shines through.
There's a quote from Greg Jennings that struck home:
"It feels awesome," Jennings said. "To God be the glory. When you stay humble, God gives you favor with men and raises you up. This victory kind of defined our season. What separates us from the other 31 teams is our will to overcome adversity."
He's preached a couple of great sermons in those few lines, commenting on a some things that have been rattling around in my head as unwritten posts.
First - "When you stay humble, God gives you favor with men and raises you up" (emphasis mine). Favor with God is what we should be striving for; part of that is realizing that all we are, all we accomplish and all we have is due only to God's blessing in our lives.
Second - "What separates us from the other 31 teams is our will to overcome adversity." Persistence in our faith walk is key. Character is built in adversity, but only as we keep putting one foot in front of the other.
More on those topics later. Meanwhile, three people (so far) in our office have called in sick today, very much in line with the national polls that say 4.5 million people are late to work the day after the Super Bowl, and 1.5 million call in sick. I wonder where the other 1,499,997 work?
