Midweek miscellany

Last night, the incredible Hohners and their wonder dog, Lumos, had me over for dinner.  Great food, wide-ranging conversation and good friends: does it get any better?

They are painting our offices; the place is an obstacle course, with file cabinets pulled into the aisles and painting carts blocking the few navigable paths.  Just keep chanting, "it will be wonderful when it is done"... then there is the smell factor, which seems to either be making people slightly sick or slightly high.  The guys doing the painting are awfully cheerful.

The new driving while texting ban went into effect at midnight.  Bah.  There are studies that show that the accident rate has been declining for years in states without a ban, and that the state with bans have shown no additional decrease in texting-related accidents.  This will be a great revenue booster for the state, however, at $187.50 per ticket.  While I'm not a fan of the nanny state micro-managing people's lives, the things I've seen while on the road convinced me 99% of the populace have zero common sense.

The temperatures fell off a cliff yesterday; the next five days or so the highs are right around freezing.  We may even see our first  accumulation of snow this weekend.  My plan for the weekend (after an early morning hair appointment) is to stay inside, finish decorating the house and maybe make some shrimp gumbo and a batch of spritz.

I'm close to done with Christmas shopping, once all my various orders arrive later this week.  A trip to Target will round everything out, I think.  Need to check the state of the gift wrap before then. Will be nice.  The cards, however, are another story.
