They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might.
2 Thessalonians 1:9
Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels."
Matthew 25:41
And the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
Revelation 20:10
You rarely hear about hell anymore. It's not preached from the pulpit, it's rarely the subject of books and it almost never seems to come up in the one place it certainly should - when sharing the gospel. Instead, we choose to believe that God is one only of love, to the exclusion of His holiness, justice and wrath against sin. We don't want to think that God will indeed damn people to eternal punishment, so we...ignore it. Yet it's clear from Scripture that hell is a very real place, one of eternal torment for those who have rejected God's offer of salvation.
Paul makes that clear in the full passage from which the verse above in his second letter to the Thessalonians is taken. In 2 Thessalonians 1:3 - 10 he is encouraging them to continue to bear up under the persecution they have been facing. He tells them that when Jesus returns, their afflictions will cease, but the punishment of those who have rejected the gospel will begin, as Jesus
...is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
2 Thessalonians 1:7 - 8
Do you know where you're going?
