Sheepdog

It's no fun being the watchdog, or so I decided after spending a good part of the morning figuring out and correcting other people's mistakes.  In the space of two short weeks, three people had made different (and very creative) errors in a single account which only has about fifteen lines of activity per month.  Everything is fixed now; the next step is to talk those involved, explaining what happened, showing how it was fixed, and, hopefully, encouraging more attention to detail in the future.

It's more than a bit like herding cats.

On the way back from the copier with the back up for the adjusting entries, it hit me:  God must feel like this all the time.  I know He needs to constantly ride herd on me; attitude adjustments, reconsidered actions, direction changes big and small - all part of a typical day for me.  I suspect I'm not alone in that experience. As Job's friend Eliphaz said, "man is born to trouble as the sparks fly upward" (Job 5:7).

It's a good thing God is patient.  When He passed by Moses on Sinai, He declared Himself  to be "...a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness" (Exodus 34:6).  He is committed to transforming us into the image of Christ, and will work tirelessly on us toward that objective.  It's not always easy to accept His correction, but it is always necessary.

He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way.  Psalm 25:9
