White, fluffy, light and cold - about four inches overnight, although the drifts on the car were deeper. At least after the first snow of the season, people remember to slow down to speeds appropriate for the conditions.
Apparently, the "appropriate speed" on National Avenue this morning was 18 mph. Sigh. No place to go around either; the right lane hasn't seen much traffic, and in that lane 18 mph is appropriate.
This is perfect weather to take your newly-licensed teenage driver to an empty, snow-covered parking lot to practice spin control. Or any driver, for that matter, who will routinely trek through the snow-covered streets. Deliberately doing doughnuts at low speeds, braking hard to feel the effects of anti-lock brakes (which I still don't like), practicing standing starts to eliminate wheelspin - all things we need to know. Controlling a slide - or at least figuring out how to mitigate the inevitable results - is a skill to be mastered before you really need it.
