Angels, demons and an Impala

The past four days of forced inactivity yielded one benefit: unlimited television time. My poor head hurt too much to concentrate on a book, and one can only take so many naps (I know, hard to fathom).

For various reasons, I'd begun watching old episodes of the television series Supernatural. Two brothers roam the countryside in a '67 Impala doing battle with demons, ghosts, zombies, angels and everything in between. The show itself is pretty decent, as horror series go, but it's what it says about what the writers believe about the world that is fascinating, and more than a little sad.

In this world, demons and other supernatural beings freely roam the earth, causing havoc and trailing misery wherever they go. Angels do battle with demons - and with one another. Lucifer is released on earth, bringing on the apocalypse. Through all of this, God is not only silent, but absent; He's not in heaven and the angels have no idea where He is. He's referred to as a "deadbeat dad", there for the creation but not providing anything by way of support or advice.

With world views like that, is it any wonder our world is in the shape it is?
