Throne rooms

Hard time getting going today. Up early enough, but not exactly moving quickly. Out to the Panera on the other side of town, with plans to hit the grocery store, then the hardware store on the way home...never happened. So it is off to the hardware store tomorrow morning.

Why the hardware store? I'm having a little plumbing work done tomorrow - actually less than anticipated. Originally, the existing 3 gallon toilet tanks were going to be replaced with much more water efficient 1.6 gallon tanks. Unfortunately, the toilets were made by a company that has redesigned them sometime in the last forty years, and the new tanks won't fit the old bowls. Entirely new thrones are more than twice the cost of the tanks for the quality of unit I currently have, so my handyman recommended against it. The recovery of the investment via water bill savings would take years.

Besides, I have a sneaking suspicion I can fill a quart milk jug with water, drop it in the tank and achieve the same water savings as a smaller tank.

Thwarted on the tank replacement, the upstairs throne will be taken off and reseated - it wobbles a bit and needs checking out. The downstairs mechanism will be adjusted to put some spring back in the handle to keep the thing from running. Finally, the upstairs bathroom sink will get a new faucet, which is the reason for the trip to the store.

I loathe single-handle faucets. The kitchen sink in the old flat had one, and seemed to need annual repairs. Of the three sinks in the condo, only the one in my bathroom is a single handle fixture. Grrr. The one in the lower bath is a wonderful nickel and enamel job similar to this:
The plan is to find something similar for upstairs, particularly since the drawer pulls on the vanity are already a chrome and enamel style.

I was able to get a ballpark figure from Tim about the potential cost to remodel the kitchen. It came to about what I expected, though new appliances will goose that up a bit. At least now I have a target to save towards. It could happen as early as a year from spring, if I'm diligent.

Um, maybe not. But at least I can start planning out what I'd like. If you have any ideas for making a walk-through galley kitchen more efficient and easier on the cook, let me know.
