I mentioned yesterday that the wildfires in the Boundary Waters area of Minnesota were, thanks to an unusual weather pattern, blowing their smoke our direction. We were under an air quality alert yesterday, and in fact, when I left the office last night, you could smell and taste the smoke and particulates in the air.
These days I'm leaving the house at just about sunrise, driving east on a slightly raised freeway. The view of the sunrise is incredible (with no suitable place to stop and take pictures, naturally), and this morning's was especially spectacular. The sun hung just above the horizon, bigger and oranger than I've ever seen it, with a wisp of grey cloud passing in front of it.
Today, although the smell is abating, the weather service raised our air quality advisory to the highest level - red - as their monitoring system uses a 24 hour look-back. Nice way to miss the truly dangerous time period.
The smoke/smog/nasty air has produced at least one on-target joke, which I will leave you with:
The NFL has apologized to the state of WI for the smell of smoke from the MN wildfire...they said that if Chicago didn't suck so much and MN didn't blow so bad that we wouldn't have been affected at all.
