Better hydration through fruit

The first cantaloupe of summer: almost over-ripe, heavy and sweet, sticky juicy dreamsicle orange flesh.  Is there anything better? My only regret is that I bought just one.

Two quarts of blueberries came home as well, along with a big tub of strawberry yogurt. Berries, yogurt and the slightly sweet, crunchy Fiber One - the perfect summer breakfast (provided the berries and yogurt are straight from the coldest part of the refrigerator).

Small watermelons filled the bins just outside the store; it seems just a bit early for them, doesn't it? Certainly the very expensive, shrink-wrapped corn on the cob in the produce section is out of season (side note: is the government paying a bonus to farmers to not grow sweet corn this year? I drove out into the country Sunday afternoon, and quite a few fields were still sporting dried out, broken down leftover corn stalks. What gives?)

The strawberries, so very good two weeks ago, looked sad and lonely today. Did I miss the prime season? I almost bought a container of blackberries, as I've never seen any so big before. And grapes...when the cantaloupe is eaten (which won't take long) it's back to the store for green seedless grapes. Frozen grapes, the perfect summer snack food.

'Tis the season to daily fill all five ice cube trays, the cubes used to cool enough drinking water to lower the level of Lake Michigan significantly. Shouldn't have checked the weather; we are under a heat advisory, with temps in the 90's the next two days, and a heat index up around 100 for tomorrow.

The high for Friday?  Will be sixty-four degrees. That would be ten degrees below the predicted low temperature for overnight tomorrow.

Wisconsin: gotta love it.
