Some days, you just wish you hadn't gotten out of bed

This would have been a difficult day anyway - odd requests for information, strange meeting requests from people several steps up the food chain from me (said request saying only "Diane will be here for the first half hour to discuss tax issues" - I have no clue), balky computers, drafty windows and a snowy, slick afternoon commute to top things off.

But we got an e-mail this morning that put everything else in perspective. A long-time employee in our Financial Aid department, someone I've worked with off and on for the last ten years, has over the last few months been battling her second bout of cancer. The e-mail this morning told us she would not be coming back to work; she has somewhere between two and four months to live.

In typical fashion, she's said she doesn't want any "stuff", rather, we are to direct any money we may have spent on gifts for her to the fund for the daughter of another recently deceased co-worker, or toward a gift certificate from Dinners by Design for her own husband to use after she is gone.

My heart is just breaking.
