Was this really a short week? It seemed so very much longer than usual...
On Labor Day, Pam came over and we had a "craft day". In other words, we sat around watching a few episodes of the first season of "House" while she sewed down the binding on a small quilt and I messed around with big boxes of fabric, pretending to put away the stack of fabric that had been sitting on the sewing room floor for weeks.
Craft days are really an excuse to sit around talking, and getting take-out for lunch.
Wednesday night, I had the great pleasure of having dinner with Holly and her parents. Good friends and good food - who can ask for more? As a result, however, I got home rather late, then watched the late news...not usually an issue, but the ridiculously-early-in-the-morning Bible study I'm in had its first meeting since June on Thursday morning. At 5:45 a.m.
No rest for the weary, though, as the every-other week group I'm in met that same evening. Urg. The running around wouldn't normally bother me, but the sleep deficit, plus the on-going heat, humidity and lack of air conditioning is wearing me down. The good news is that it will cool off next week - yeah, fall!
The woman who is the rock of our office had a mini-meltdown this morning. She has the class to have them privately, and to complain directly to a VP who is both understanding and in a position to do something about the underlying issues. As she told me, it wasn't the minor problem that precipitated the melt-down, but the addition of that on top of all the other garbage that happens around here. Poor MJ - a good portion of the office tends to go to her to vent, and she just needed to let off some steam.
It is, however, a really bad thing when the most patient, kind, helpful person in our office is driven to this state. We constantly hear how the people in the office are our biggest resource, how we communicate well with each other and work as a team; at the same time, the actions of management indicate that we are not valued at all, and aren't even trusted, in many cases, with the information to do the work they pay us to do.
It is really time to start seriously looking for something else.
No great plans for the weekend. Lots of sewing to do, lists to make and books to read. Our women's retreat is the end of next week; need to figure out what to pack. The clothes are easy - it's the snacks everyone is obsessed with. You simply cannot have a christian women's retreat without wall-to-wall food. We have sixteen women going, and I would bet you dollars to doughnuts (which will probably be one of the snacks) that each woman will bring at least two different treats, and enough of each for all of us. I'm not sure why we signed up to cook the various meals - none of us will be hungry.
