Friends were married this weekend in a sweet, very "them" ceremony. What can I say, the recessional music was the Throne Room music by John Williams, from one of the Star Wars movies! Fitting, since the groom loves the movies, and the bride's dad owns a trading card shop that caters to the science fiction crowd. The bride was radiant, the groom handsome, and the weather a little too chilly for the strapless dresses, but clear and sunny.
The groom is a young man I taught Sunday School for - back when he was two years old. He's grown into a godly young man, who has just been called to a small church as their youth pastor. While it is currently a little less than full time position, the salary for part time is the same as he is making at his present full time job. God is indeed good.
Heavenly Father, continue to grow Joy and David individually in their knowledge of and love for You. As they do this, draw them ever closer to each other as well. Watch over them tenderly during this first year of marriage and all the adjustments that need to be made. Grant them the discernment to see which issues are critical, and which, in the long run, are not as important. Surround them with wise counsel from family and friends when they ask for it, and enough distance from the same people when they need it. Remind them that love is an action, not a feeling, and encourage them each to esteem the other more highly than themselves, to humbly put the other before self. Provide them clear guidance on the path that You have laid out for them, guarding them from the rabbit trails and missteps that so often derail us. We ask this in Jesus' name, Amen.
