The previous record for a one day snowfall in Milwaukee was just over 9 inches, set in 1915. Well, the all day snow yesterday gave us exactly one foot, officially, at the measuring station at the airport.
Which is only half a mile from my home.
The snow removal contractor started up just before 5 a.m. in my complex. By the time I left the house, the driveway was plowed and a poor guy in a snowmobile suit was working on the steps. A plow truck rammed snow from the roadway into a huge pile, but there was an eighteen inch ridge in my lane at the intersection of my road and the main road out of the complex. There's little traffic there at the best of times, so I simply scooted into the other lane to get out.
Relying on the television traffic people, I took the freeway rather than following my instincts and taking city streets. Things were down to pavement, except for the very end of the on ramp, which felt as if it hadn't been plowed or treated at all. Once past that, it was easy going.
I didn't think we had gotten that much snow. Then again, I was snug in my burrow all day, never poking a nose out.
Speaking of burrows, the groundhog saw his shadow, so we are in for six more weeks of winter. Eh, winter only really started with this snowfall; I can handle a few more weeks.

Snow removal contractor? My, aren't we fancy? :) We can't boast of one of those.
I'm surprised the one day record was only 9 inches. I'd have guessed more. Wrong side of the Lakes, I suppose.
