Here's the thing about pop culture references: in order to serve their purpose they must be either cutting-edge current or alternatively classic in nature, and above all, used correctly.
Used incorrectly, however, it simply underscores all the things you are not.
I'm not sure which I find more appalling, that the President thought it appropriate to use a pop culture reference when speaking about the serious business of the sequester, or that he so badly mangled it, merging Star Trek and Star Wars in a way guaranteed to set off legions of fans of both franchises.
We seem to have a President more concerned with being the "hip", "cool" leader than with governing the country.
He's not doing very well at either.
